Q is for…. Qualifications
Absolutely anybody can become a PAT Tester, but it is absolutely essential that you have the correct qualifications to make sure you adhere to regulations.
R is for… Regulations
PAT testing regulations aren’t as simple as you might think. There are at least 4 regulatory bodies that cover PAT testing and you are meant to adhere to them ALL to promote electrical safety. The main regulations come from:
- The Health & Safety at Work Act 1974
- Management of Health & Safety at Work Regulations 1999
- Electricity at Work Regulations 1989
- Workplace (Health, Safety & Welfare Regulations) 1992
- The Provisions & Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998
S is for… Safety
It’s a completely obvious point, but the most important part of PAT testing, as an employer, is that it ensures the safety of you company and those working within it; both from accidental damage, and, most importantly, any legal repercussions that might come your way because of faulty appliances.
T is for… Testing
The actual process of carrying out PAT testing is a varied one because it depends on the type of appliance you are testing. Testing a lead, for example, is likely to be a very different experience from testing a kettle. Test results should always be logged after testing and the appliance should be certified as safe/unsafe with a sticker.
PAT Testing with Total Safe
Firstly, your Total Safe engineer will perform a visual inspection of your appliances. They will then carry out a more in-depth check using specialist PAT testing equipment. This test includes earth continuity, lead polarity, and insulation resistance checks.
Once tested and deemed safe, your Total Safe engineer will apply a PASS sticker to the appliance. This sticker displays the date when the last test was conducted, the date when the next test is required, the engineer’s name and contact details for Total Safe.
We keep a record of every test and due date for all of our clients, and make sure we arrange re-tests before your certification elapses. With Total Safe you’ll never have to worry about your appliances, we make sure they’re always tested and compliant.
