The fact of the matter is that we, as humans, are fragile. Thankfully, for most of us, we have learnt just how fragile we and have learned how to take care of ourselves. But what about taking care of others? Our loved ones? We can take care of others, and ourselves by having Basic Life Support (BLS) skills such as CPR and by taking part in AED training courses (Automated External Defibrillators).

“But I don’t have time to go on a BLS Course?” is unfortunately the attitude of most people. But did you know that our course are only 2hours long! Most of us have probably spent longer getting ready for a night out or double that time binge-watching a series on catch-up.

88% of cardiac arrest happen in the home

In the UK alone, there are over 30,000 cardiac arrests that occur outside of hospital

Only 6.4% of cardiac arrest victims survive because people witnessing the incident do not know CPR

Around 70% of us feel helpless to act during a cardiac emergency because, either we do not know how to administer CPR, or our previous training has since lapsed.

So, why should you learn CPR?

With the above statistics in mind, if called on to administer CPR in an emergency, the life you save is statistically more likely to be a loved one.

Remember… sudden cardiac arrest is NOT the same as a heart attack. It occurs when electrical impulses in the heart become rapid or chaotic, which causes the heart to suddenly stop beating. Whereas a heart attack occurs when the blood supply to part of the heart muscle is blocked. A heart attack may cause cardiac arrest.

Did you know that effective bystander CPR administered immediately after sudden cardiac arrest can double or even triple a victim’s chance of survival?

Sadly, only 32% of cardiac arrest victims get CPR from a bystander.

CPR is such an important skill to have. You could save a life with it. But its not just CPR that is important, it is other Basic Life Support Skills too…

BLS skills are vital to have. By performing simply procedures and following certain guidelines, it may be possible to save lives by giving basic treatment until professional medical help can take over.

In an emergency, there is no time to start reading instructions and a manual on how to help would be null and void considering that every emergency is unique. However, if you’ve memorized some of the basic procedures from a course, it will help you react much more quickly and efficiently. Remember too, that practice makes perfect! So, the more hands-on time you get on a course, the better.

BLS can make the difference from complete recovery and permanent disability. It can help you save a life.
