How can you tell if a Fire Hydrant has a leak?

Most hydrant leaks, if any, will be below ground so will not be visible. But even obvious leaks on the surface are often not reported. People usually just assume that someone else will have already reported a problem. Any leaks from a hydrant will affect water flow and pressure. This makes is less effective when firefighters need to use it. If you do see any signs of a leak, we would advise you to report them, even if you are unsure if you are right in what you are seeing.

Leaks from water supply pipes or mains

Leaks from water supply pipes or mains are primarily the responsibility of the water company. However, this can affect the availability of water from a hydrant. So even though, this point is not directly to do with the hydrant itself, the sooner any surrounding leaks are reported to the water company, the sooner they can fix the problem. The quicker the problem is addressed, the less time the hydrant must be affected.

Illegal use of Fire Hydrants

Many fire hydrant problems are caused by illegal use. It is illegal to use one to obtain water for any purposes other than firefighting. This is unless it has been authorised by the water authority or other person to whom the hydrant belongs.

You can report to local water companies or the fire service if you suspect illegal use. Key pieces of information to note if you can would be registration number or any company names on a suspected vehicle.

Parking on/preventing access to a Fire Hydrant

It is an offence to be parked over or to prevent access to a fire hydrant when it is required for firefighting. Parking for a short time over one can occur occasionally, but if this is happening repeatedly by the same vehicle, it should be reported.

You should always be considerate when parking near a fire hydrant. If you have one located outside/near your property, you should ask friends, relatives and neighbours to be aware of this and park with consideration too. Remember; this could save crucial time in the event of an emergency!
