It’s a question the Total Safe UK team is asked all the time – Why is PAT testing so important? It all started in 1989…. As the Electricity At Work Regulations took effect, the visual inspection and testing of electrical systems and equipment was introduced. Workplace fires have significantly dropped since then but there are still so many electricity-related workplace fires.
Surely, we’re safer now though? We may well be, but the statistics behind electrical accidents show the continued need to avoid complacency. In 2012/13, 16,800 accidental workplace fires occurred; 6,400 of these were caused by faulty or misused appliances.
Why is PAT testing so important?
Despite the risks, 80% of faulty electrical products are never returned. And the number of unsafe consumer products is on the rise. Counterfeit and potentially dangerous electrical goods, illegal plugs for example, being sold on sites like eBay are being seized but there are always some still out there somewhere, so it is always best to get any electrical items tested.
Measures such as PAT Testing, could help to prevent injuries and damage to precious equipment, as well as save lives. So if you are thinking of leaving that faulty kettle for any longer, don’t!
