What if I do not have a Fire Safety Log Book on site?
There is no statutory requirement to maintain a Fire Log book. However, it is a legal requirement for managers/building owners to take responsibility for the fire safety within their property. Under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005…
- Article 17 requires the ‘responsible person’ for a premise to ensure all fire safety facilities/equipment/devices etc are maintained in good working order and in good repair
- Article 21 states that where there are employees, they should be provided with adequate safety training
The Fire Safety Order requires the responsible person to ensure that:
- All fire safety facilities, equipment and devices are maintained in efficient working order and good repair
- Employees are provided with adequate safety training so are therefore equipped to handle any fire situations
- Keep a written record of tests, maintenance and safety training. These records should be readily available, for instance, to be produced during an audit, to demonstrate that they are being carried out
The most effective way of demonstrating compliance with fire safety legislation is to keep records. A log book is one way of doing this because it has space to record all of the above and more.
