Every workplace carries with it fire risks – most of us will assume that this risk is maximized in the hotter summer months. With summer fast approaching, the risk of fire is naturally at its highest. However, the unpredictable weather of the UK has left us stuck with a constant downpour of rain. Typical! But as this cooler weather is settling in, it is easy to subconsciously push aside the threat of a fire at your workplace. However, the harm a fire might cause to your business and, more importantly, yourself and your employees, should never be overlooked, regardless of which season we are in!
Fire hazards can arise in a variety of environments or while undertaking certain activities. Even in offices and other lower risk environments, the fire risks are always there. This is why fire safety and emergency procedures in the workplace are so important and are things that should be covered in detail in your fire risk assessment.
As an employer, it is your responsibility to ….
– Know how to manage the fire risks to your workplace
– Develop and maintain efficient fire safety procedures
– Know how to introduce and maintain appropriate fire safety equipment
– Train your employees in the above
There are 4 steps you can take to reduce fire hazards in your workplace
1. Identify all fire hazards in your workplace e.g. presence of ignition sources (heaters, lighting, electrical equipment etc) and fuel (packaging, plastics, rubber, petrol, chemicals etc)
2. Assess the risks posed by these hazards – this will determine which hazards need the most urgent attention
3. Put measures in place to control the hazards e.g. eliminate work processes that could generate an explosive atmosphere, service and clean all machinery, remove waste material that could act as fuel, dispose of flammable substances correctly etc.
4. Monitor the hazards and look for any changes
