The start of the new year is the perfect time for ‘out with the old and in with the new’. New clothes, furniture, an extension or upgrading a room in your house perhaps? But what about fire safety equipment? What about replacing Fire Extinguishers?
Fire Extinguishers may be very durable, but like most things, they don’t last forever. A properly maintained fire extinguisher has the potential to last up to 20 years. But in some cases, it is safer and more cost effective replacing fire extinguishers.
How do you know when it’s time for replacing fire extinguishers?
The most reliable way is to have the extinguisher(s) inspected by a fire protection company. Business owners are required to have their portable fire extinguishers professional inspected annually with internal maintenance every so many months depending on the equipment type. Homeowners should follow a similar schedule.
Some tell-tale signs it is time to replace…
– Damage to the cylinder; including visible signs of physical damage such as dents, corrosion or leakage etc.
– Illegible instructions; if the instructions for operating the unit can no longer be read, the unit needs to be replaced
– Excessive damage to the components; broken or loose handles, damaged hoses etc
– Age; over time, an extinguisher can become obsolete. If you suspect that your extinguisher is old and you’re not sure when it was last inspected, have a professional look
– Hazard change; extinguishers protect specific hazards. Over time, these hazards may change requiring a revaluation/replacement of current fire protection equipment
Even the most well-maintained fire extinguishers will deteriorate to an unsafe condition and reach the end of their lives eventually. If you are unsure when it comes to yours, it is always better to be safe and have them looked at by a professional.
